Big Quarterly, a hip-hop gospel musical, spotlights the legacy of Peter Spencer – formerly enslaved, he rose to found the nation’s first wholly independent Black church in 1813 and sparked the Big Quarterly–a joyful reunion for freedom in Delaware that still exists to this day. For those not yet free, Big Quarterly was an opportunity to secure passage on the Underground Railroad. Perpetually haunted by deep childhood wounds in the face of outer powers, Peter’s private battles threaten to unravel his life’s great mission. Through the grace of God, he discovers the underground family secrets that provide him a path to truly be free. 

Our piece leverages the modern-day hip-hop musical form, paired with an original narrative informed by real historical events, to explore what America must confront in its past to move toward a more honest future. As history continues to be challenged and, at time, erased, storytelling through art becomes essential. We aim to immerse audiences in Peter's world through contemporary dance, hip-hop sampling, and innovative production design--giving this history breath, rhythm, and life.

What Will the Funds Be Used For?

100% of the funds will be used to support the ongoing development of Big Quarterly, including paying the working professional artists who participate in staged readings and movement-based workshops, as well as the other artistic collaborators for their work in advancing our piece. We also aim to record and release an EP/concept album with NYC’s finest talent.  This is one of the best ways to build our audience base and capture the attention of producers to invest in a commercial production of the show. The funds will be graciously stewarded by our fiscal sponsorship with the amazing New York Theater Barn.

New York Theatre Barn is a NYC-based inclusive home for artists and a holistic incubator of original culture-shifting musicals. Since 2007, they have given underrepresented artists the freedom to experiment in front of live audiences - often for the first time, while providing them with resources to build something innovative, intentional, and impactful.
