WINNER
New York Theatre Barn is currently raising funds to support a 6-track concept EP of the original musical Winner - written by Nico Juber (Millennials Are Killing Musicals) and Joe Barros. The album will be recorded by Theatre Barn Records in January 2025 and will be released wherever you stream music.
Inspired by the bi-erasure of its writers, Winner is about a rigged election at a Southern California high school in 1999. At the center of this original coming out and coming-of-age story, the musical explores a female-identifying queer narrative and is one of the first to explore bisexuality. Autumn has prepared her whole life for this election, and her chances of landing a college scholarship depend on her winning. But, when Autumn’s best friend (with benefits) Stevie gets added as a last-minute candidate running against her, tensions rise between the girls. When Stevie unexpectedly wins the election, Autumn hacks into the new electronic system to discover that the election was rigged - and their hidden relationship becomes public when the truth about the election is revealed.
Winner is an entirely original story based on entirely too many true events, and asks the question: If everyone’s losing, who wins? The original musical has been developed at The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in collaboration with New York Theatre Barn, and received a workshop in London’s West End last summer.
